The beautiful dream conceived 20 years back has materialized into a magnificent institute. After the establishment of NCERT in 1960′s and the SCERT in 1970′s, the need for a third tier of training and resource support structure, right at the district level was genuinely felt in order to improve the quality of basic eduction. As a result, DIET’s were setup in all the districts of all the states in the country.

Teacher Education is a continuing process and its pre service and in service components are inseperable. To strengthen the two dimensions of teacher education: Pre-Service and In-service-area, District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) was established across the nation. The vision of the institutes is to provide better academic input for teachers in service as well as prospective teachers. These Institutes are closer to the field and hence more aware of its problem and needs.

About teachers, the Education Commission (1964-66) had observed, “of all the factors that influence the quality of education… the quality, competence and character of teachers are undoubtedly the most significant”. In a view to strengthen the teacher education, the National Policy on Education (NPE 1986) and Programme of action (POA 1992) envisaged a District level Institute in the shape of District Institute of Education and Training (DIET).

Prior to the adoption of NPE, National level and State level Institutions like NCERT, NUPEA and SCERT provided support to the elementary Teacher Education particularly in the area of pre service teacher educaion. As per the guidelines of NPE, a Centrally sponsored Scheme of Restructuring and Reorganization of Teacher Education was approved in October 1987, thereby a third-district-level-tier i.e. District Institute of Education and Training Institutes were formed throughout the country in all districts.

Purpose of DIET is to conduct different kinds of trainings programmers to improve the quality of basic education and create a desirable environment within the district in regard to enroll more and more children of school going age and pave the way for retention of those who are admitted in the school and to ensure the high literacy percentage of male and female as whole.
